Our shortest educational program, workshops are offered five times a year, for one week, for those interested in timber framing but unable to make the longer time commitment for an apprenticeship or a design internship.
The workshop curriculum is structured around a shop education because we believe that the art of timber framing is best learned through practice. We seek to provide the opportunity and the place for those interested in practicing the art. Taught in our heated, timber framed workshop, workshops focus primarily on in-shop instruction in laying out and cutting frame pieces from stock timbers, with a trial assembly or raising on the final day to illustrate the principles of frame assembly. Though we emphasize the use of hand tools such as chisels and mallets, we also use power tools such as circular saws and chain mortisers.

In addition to in-shop instruction there are daily lectures about other aspects of timber framing, covering a variety of subjects ranging from frame design, use of reference sides, characteristics of wood, and the design process. The design staff will also meet individually with students to discuss their timber framing goals and how best to realize them. If you have a design for a timber frame structure, bring it with you and we can discuss that, too.

Workshops begin at 9 am on Sunday and run through 12 pm on the following Saturday. Monday through Friday, the class runs from 8 am to 5 pm, with 1 hour for lunch. There is a $250 registration fee. Limited housing is available on-site for an additional fee ($100 single room, $80 shared room, $40 camping, plus a refundable $30 cleaning deposit).
